What to Pack for an African Safari

Expert advice from Western Canada’s African Safari Specialists

Packing for safari is easier than you think, here’s exactly what to bring and what to leave behind.

Don't Stress!

One of the most common questions we hear from our safari guests is: What do I pack?

The good news, packing for safari is easier than you think. Keep it simple, comfortable, and practical. After hosting hundreds of guests in Africa, we know exactly what works—and what doesn’t.

The Essentials

What You’ll Want to Bring

  • Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, beige, greens)
  • Lightweight layers for cooler mornings and evenings
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Small daypack for game drives

What Not to Pack

 Keep It Simple

  • Bright colours or loud patterns
  • Heavy or hard-shell luggage
  • Too many outfit changes
  • Formal clothing (you won’t need it)

Luggage Guidelines (Important)

 What You Need to Know

  • Soft-sided duffel bags are strongly recommended
  • Weight limits are typically 15 kg / 33 lbs per person
  • Smaller bags make transfers and light aircraft travel much easier and help avoid delays or repacking at the airport

Cameras & Extras

  • Your iPhone or smartphone will capture incredible photos
  • A zoom lens camera is a nice bonus, but not required
  • Binoculars are helpful for wildlife viewing

Pro Tips from our Experience

  •  Laundry service is available at most safari lodges
  • Safari style is casual and relaxed throughout
  • Pack lighter than you think—you’ll be glad you did

Safari Packing FAQs

What should I wear on an African safari?

Neutral colours such as khaki, beige, and green are recommended, primarily due to dusty conditions during game drives—not because animals are afraid or it will impact your wildlife viewing experience.

How much luggage can I bring on safari?

Most safari itineraries that include small aircraft flights have luggage limits of approximately 15 kg (33 lbs) per person. Soft-sided duffel bags are strongly recommended.

Do I need special clothing for safari?

No special clothing is required. Comfortable, casual attire suitable for warm days and cooler mornings is ideal. Layers work best.

Can I do laundry during my safari?

Yes, most safari lodges offer daily or next-day laundry service, allowing you to pack lighter. Laundry is typically inexpensive, making it easy to refresh your clothing throughout your journey.

Do I need a professional camera?

No, today’s smartphones take excellent photos and are more than sufficient. A camera with a zoom lens is optional for those who enjoy photography.

Are binoculars necessary?

Binoculars are helpful for wildlife viewing, especially for spotting animals at a distance, but they are not essential. Our safari vehicles are equipped with binoculars for guests to use during game drives.

What kind of shoes should I bring?

Comfortable walking shoes or lightweight runners are ideal.  Our safaris are conducted in Land Cruisers, so very little walking is required. Sandals or runners are perfectly suitable for most days, heavy hiking boots are not necessary.

Is safari dress formal in the evenings?

No, safari style is casual throughout. There is no need for formal clothing.
