One of the first questions travellers ask when planning an African safari is
“When is the best time to go?”
The answer may surprise you — Africa is a year-round safari destination, and each season offers something different. Wildlife viewing, weather, migration patterns, and travel style can all influence the ideal timing for your journey.
At Network Travel, we help Canadian travellers plan safaris based on what matters most to them — incredible wildlife encounters, comfortable travel conditions, and unforgettable experiences in some of Africa’s most iconic landscapes.

Planning the perfect safari depends on more than just the calendar.
Different regions of Africa offer outstanding wildlife viewing at different times of year. Kenya and Tanzania are famous for the Great Migration, while southern Africa offers incredible safaris during its dry winter months. Understanding these seasonal patterns helps travellers choose the best time for their dream safari experience.
While safari experiences are available year-round, Africa generally follows two main safari seasons.
Dry Season (June – October)
This is widely considered the classic safari season. Vegetation is thinner and animals gather around rivers and watering holes, making wildlife easier to spot. These months are ideal for first-time safari travellers.
Green Season (November – May)
Often called the “secret season” among safari experts. The landscapes are lush, birdlife is exceptional, and crowds are smaller. Many travellers love this time of year for photography and quieter safari experiences.
Both seasons offer incredible wildlife encounters — the best choice depends on your destination and travel goals.
January
January is one of the best months for an African safari in East Africa. In Kenya and Tanzania, the Great Migration calving season begins in the southern Serengeti, attracting predators and creating incredible wildlife viewing opportunities.
February
February continues the spectacular Great Migration calving season in Tanzania. Wildlife activity is extremely high as thousands of wildebeest calves are born, making it one of the most exciting times for photographers and safari enthusiasts.
March
March is still excellent for safaris in East Africa, with lush landscapes and active wildlife. Toward the end of the month, some regions begin transitioning into the rainy season, but safari experiences remain outstanding.
April
April marks the start of the “green season” in many safari regions. While rainfall increases, the scenery becomes incredibly vibrant and safari camps are quieter, offering a more exclusive experience.
May
May continues the green season with lush landscapes and excellent birdlife. Many safari travellers enjoy this time because fewer tourists visit the parks, creating a more relaxed and intimate safari experience.
June
June signals the beginning of the dry season in East Africa. Wildlife viewing becomes easier as vegetation thins and animals gather near water sources. The Great Migration begins moving toward the western Serengeti.
July
July is one of the most popular safari months. The dry season provides exceptional wildlife viewing, and the Great Migration moves north toward the Mara River in Kenya.
August
August is prime safari season in Kenya’s Maasai Mara. The famous river crossings of the Great Migration often occur during this time, creating dramatic wildlife encounters.
September
September continues the peak safari season in Kenya and Tanzania. Wildlife viewing remains outstanding as animals concentrate around rivers and waterholes.
October
October is still part of the dry season and offers excellent safari conditions. It’s a fantastic time to visit before the short rains begin later in the month.
November
November marks the start of the short rains in East Africa, bringing fresh greenery to the landscapes. Wildlife viewing is still excellent and visitor numbers tend to be lower.
December
December is a wonderful time for safari travel. Wildlife remains active, and the landscapes begin transitioning back to the lush green season as the Great Migration returns south toward Tanzania.
Kenya and East Africa are among the world’s premier safari destinations, offering exceptional wildlife viewing throughout the year. Certain seasons, however, provide particularly memorable experiences depending on what travellers hope to see.
January – March
These months are part of East Africa’s green season and can be a fantastic time for safari. Landscapes are lush, wildlife remains active, and visitor numbers are typically lower than during peak migration months.
June – October
Widely considered the classic safari season in Kenya. The dry weather makes wildlife easier to spot as animals gather around rivers and waterholes. These months are ideal for first-time safari travellers.
July – September: The Great Migration
During this time, the famous Great Migration often reaches Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Thousands of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River in one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on Earth.
This is one of the most sought-after safari experiences in Africa and a highlight for many travellers visiting Kenya’s Maasai Mara.
Because of its popularity, this period can also be one of the busiest times in the Mara. Experienced safari planning, including choosing the right conservancies, guides, and timing, can make a big difference in enjoying the migration while avoiding the busiest viewing areas.
November – December
The short rains bring fresh greenery to the landscape, excellent birdlife, and quieter safari parks. Many travellers enjoy this period for its beautiful scenery and relaxed atmosphere.
South Africa offers outstanding safari experiences throughout much of the year, particularly in famous wildlife regions such as Kruger National Park and the surrounding private reserves.
May – September (Dry Winter Season)
These months are widely considered the best time for wildlife viewing in South Africa. Vegetation is thinner and animals gather around water sources, making them easier to spot. Cool mornings and warm afternoons create comfortable safari conditions.
October – April (Green Season)
The summer months bring lush landscapes, excellent birdlife, and newborn animals. While vegetation can be thicker, this period offers beautiful scenery and fewer visitors in many safari areas.
